Successocity – What It Is & What It Means

It was midnight and I was awake and reading “Tribes” – a book by Seth Godin.

On page 35 of his book, he has a few paragraphs about “Status Quo” and how we often run our businesses based solely on Status Quo as opposed to what we feel should be the way our companies and organizations are run.  It got me thinking.

For a long time, I’ve always felt that the value of what we did at BSETC could not be shown simply through portfolio items and other marketing means.  I always felt that in those instances, it just was never quite enough.  Something didn’t fit the bill so to speak.

I quickly learned that the issue was that we didn’t have enough live case studies where people could follow along and see what it was to create, develop, nurture and then sprout to the world in a creative and inspired way.  I mean, we had a lot of “closet” cases that we couldn’t be transparent about but nothing where we fully dissected projects and allowed community to weigh in on their opinions through the process.

So, after reading that one paragraph in “Tribes”, the idea for Successocity sprouted into my mind.

Here are some of the questions that followed:

  • What could I do for business owners if I charged them zero in upfront costs.
  • What if I said, “I’ll only receive payment IF this campaign generates revenue.  Otherwise, I don’t get paid.”
  • What would happen if my income was solely dependent on the success of the work I was doing?
  • How would that change how I work?
  • How would that change client interaction?
  • What opportunities could be formed by people who didn’t have the budget or manpower beforehand?
  • Imagine if a community could vote on parts of a project to create the ultimate needed thing?
  • What if others could do this same sort of working relationship under one roof?

I figured this was well worth figuring out so I sat down with a piece of paper and began sketching out ideas.  I got on Skype with my good friend David Burch to get a name that embodied what I wanted to speak out to others about and in that short hour, Successocity was born (thanks again David!).

So, what does Successocity do?

Well, for the moment, it’s me — Erin Blaskie — setting out to do work for individuals where the income I receive, the monetary amount that I am paid for my expertise, hard work and knowledge is ONLY derived when the campaign itself starts earning an income.  Think of it as an affiliate who does all the work for free and takes their percentage of the sales.

If you have projects you are sitting on right now but haven’t moved forward due to lack of budget, lack of resources, lack of someone to stand behind you in your dreams, then I want to help you.  I want to get involved with projects that are inspiring and make a difference and only receive payment for my time IF the project performs.  That’s it.

How you can submit your projects.

Now, let me be honest (as I’m never anything but)… I’ll be choosing these projects super carefully so that I can ensure the projects are fun, creative, inspiring and aligned with my own vision and ideals.  When you submit projects, they will go through an evaluation and at any given time, I’ll only be working on one… maybe two projects.

This work is not about earning a lot of income quickly.  This project for me is about making a real difference in businesses and being involved in a much greater way.

If this sounds like your project, submit your info here.

The types of projects I am looking for.

I want to be able to work on projects that have a clear start and finish line.  Perpetual projects (ie: those that never end) are not what I am looking to work on.  If you are finding yourself unclear about your project, please do not apply.  I want to work with individuals who have a clear vision and have put thought into their project.

I want to work with individuals who can release some of the control and power so that I can implement things quickly and efficiently.  This isn’t to say that I’ll be taking over but I do want to feel like the leeway is there for me to create and keep the project moving forward.

The biggest part is the idea that these projects have to mean something.  It can’t be another Internet Marketing e-book launch (although, if you yourself are inspiring and fun then definitely apply!) but rather things that are making a difference, having an impact, touching people’s lives and using creativity as a catalyst for change.

Come along for the journey.

There are many ways on this blog to follow along.  Eventually, I’ll be blogging about the projects I’m involved on and using transparency to get your opinions on things I am working on.  If you’d like to contribute and have opportunities to spread the message about these projects, please stick around.  Add the blog to your RSS reader and keep in touch.

If you yourself would like to do this type of work for people as well, let me know via e-mail.  If I get enough people who want to be agents for a changing way of working, I’ll setup a network where we can communicate available projects and the like.

Either way, I can’t wait to see how this work changes the type of people I get to interact with and the projects I’m involved in.

Yours truly,

Erin

Success! Project #1 Chosen…

So… some of you have been wondering when and what my first project for Successocity would be and I’ve got news…  I have chosen it!

I actually chose the project two weeks ago (around the time of our five year anniversary) but this person was out of town so I wanted to wait to announce it.  Now that he’s back, I’m happy to report that I’ve chosen AJ Pape to work with on the first Successocity project.

AJ has been in my universe for some time now and it’s really exciting for me to get to work with him.  I always knew I wanted to but was never sure of the capacity.  I knew his work, his ideas and his brilliance and my “get things done” attitude needed a super special place to converge and it found it here.  So, here’s the best part…  AJ has agreed to allowing me to blog about our process while we work together.  The only thing I won’t be revealing is trade secrets and our BIG BIG ideas until they are ready for you…

The other thing we’ll be doing is posting surveys and ideas here so that we can get your feedback on different things. Your participation and involvement is not mandatory but rather something you get to be a part of if you wish.  If you know AJ at all, you know this process will be infused with brilliance and fun.

Let the blogging begin…

Day One

We had our first real call today (well, technically second but this was our first strategy call) and it was phenomenal!  We spent an hour and a half on the phone coming up with an idea for the first thing we’d begin with.  When I do work with my clients, I always recommend to them that we start in ONE place so that I can become familiar with them and their business and vice versa.

So, we discussed the first product that we’d release to the public.  During this conversation it was important to talk about the BIG ideas and the over-arching business direction but also bring it back to the minutia… The items that will get the product brought to the public.  This is something I do when I talk to every client because it really helps to focus them down on one thing and, as entrepreneurs, we often need that!

During this discussion, we came up with some really great domain names so we went ahead and secured those.  This was important too because once you own something, you almost have that built in accountability.  Otherwise… you end up sitting on it and potentially wasting that opportunity.

We talked about logistics and layout of different things, tools that we’d use, resources we had already present in our network and a wide variety of other things related to this one product.  When we felt good about where we were starting, we then wrapped up the call and I took the next step of getting everything into our system (we use Basecamp) and giving AJ some really cool templates to use / review as we move through the process.

Oh, and we scheduled our next call for Thursday.  I can’t wait!

Why I’m Blogging This

The reason I want to blog this process is because I want to show you what goes into these various projects and the creation and so that you can share your experience, expertise and ideas along the way too.  As we unveil more and more of the “actuals”, you can provide us with greater feedback and the process can move through in a united and participated way.

Answering Questions on Choosing Projects

I’ve had a few questions come in with regards to when I will be choosing projects and I wanted to answer those here on the blog.

Choosing the projects for Successocity is not the same as bringing on a new client. I have to review, decide, look at and determine what will be a good fit for me, what I will actually be able to make successful, which project resonates with me the most, etc.  So, I don’t have a timeline for this.

I suppose the best answer is that I’ll know the project when I see it.  I’m only doing 2-3 of these projects every six months so I want to give myself the time needed to choose something.  Successocity is not like a contest where I choose a winner on a certain date, it goes way beyond that.

So, although the question isn’t really answered, I am hoping to have a project chosen by the end of this month to start working on in August. I will definitely let everyone know via this blog when I do choose one so stay tuned via the blog or via Twitter.

Hope that helps :)
